The Path to True Greatness - “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.”

In the gospel of Mark chapter 9:30-37 we find a powerful lesson that is deeply relevant to our lives today. We see Jesus taking His disciples aside, teaching them about His coming suffering and death, and then addressing their debate over who among them is the greatest. This passage speaks directly to the human heart’s desire for recognition, power, and success—something we can all relate to in our modern world.

Let’s look into this passage and reflect on its meaning for us today, especially in the context of our pursuit of greatness, success, and status.

Jesus Predicts His Passion: Understanding the Cost of Love

In the opening verses, Jesus once again predicts His death and resurrection. He tells the disciples plainly that He will be “delivered into the hands of men. They will kill him, and three days after he is killed, he will rise” (Mark 9:31). Yet the disciples don’t understand what He’s talking about, and they’re afraid to ask.

In today’s world, we are often uncomfortable with the concept of suffering and sacrifice. Society teaches us to avoid pain, seek pleasure, and always pursue personal gain. But here, Jesus is pointing us in a radically different direction: He shows us that true love and greatness come at a cost.

Jesus willingly embraces suffering and death for the sake of others, out of love. He invites us to do the same, that is to live lives of sacrificial love. How often do we avoid discomfort or sacrifice for the sake of our convenience or ambition? But true greatness, as Jesus shows us, lies in serving others, even when it costs us something.

The Disciples Argue About Greatness: A Mirror of Our Culture

As they walk with Jesus, the disciples begin to argue about which one of them is the greatest. It’s a very human moment and it reflects our own struggles with pride, status, and competition. In today’s society, we are constantly bombarded with messages that tell us we must be the best, the most successful, the most powerful. Social media often becomes a platform for showcasing our accomplishments, comparing ourselves to others, and seeking validation.

Jesus, knowing what they were arguing about, asks them a simple but profound question: “What were you discussing on the way?” (Mark 9:33). The disciples are silent, perhaps embarrassed by their petty debate. Jesus then teaches them that true greatness is not about being first, but about being last and serving others.

“Whoever Wants to Be First Must Be Last”

This teaching of Jesus challenges everything our modern world holds at heart. He turns the idea of greatness upside down. In a society that values power, wealth, and status, Jesus calls us to embrace humility and service. He tells His disciples, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all” (Mark 9:35).

In our daily lives, how often do we strive to be first? Whether in our careers, our social circles, or even in our families, we can easily fall into the trap of seeking recognition and affirmation from others. But Jesus invites us to a different path. The path of humility and self-giving love.

We are called to put others before ourselves, to seek out ways to serve, not for the sake of being noticed or praised, but because that is the way of Christ. This is especially important in a world that often rewards selfishness and ambition over kindness and compassion.

The Child as the Model of Greatness

Jesus concludes His teaching by taking a little child in His arms and saying, “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me” (Mark 9:37). In Jesus’ time, children were seen as insignificant, without status or influence. Yet Jesus holds up the child as a model of true greatness.

In today’s world, where success is often measured by accomplishments and influence, Jesus reminds us that the ones who are often overlooked like the humble, the weak, the vulnerable . . . are the very ones who reveal the heart of God. The child represents those who have no power, who depend on others for care, and who are often forgotten by society.

How do we treat those who have no status or power?

Do we value them, or do we overlook them?

Jesus teaches us that when we receive and care for the least among us, we are receiving and serving Him.

Living the Gospel in Today’s World

As we reflect on this Gospel passage, let’s ask ourselves:

What does it mean to be great in today’s world?

Is it about having the best career, the biggest house, or the most followers on social media?

Or is it about something deeper that reflects the heart of Christ?

Jesus shows us that true greatness is found in humility, service, and love. It’s found in putting others first, even when it’s difficult or inconvenient. It’s found in welcoming the weak and the vulnerable, just as Jesus welcomed the little child.

In our families, workplaces, and communities, we are called to live out this radical message of humility and service. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to help us embrace this call to greatness—not as the world defines it, but as Jesus teaches us.

Let us seek to be servants of all, knowing that in doing so, we are following the path of Christ.

As we go forth today, let’s take Jesus’ words to heart: “Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.” Let’s seek to live lives of service, humility, and love, knowing that true greatness lies not in what we achieve for ourselves, but in how we serve and love others, especially those who are most in need.

May God give us the grace to follow this path of true greatness, and may we always seek to be servants of all, just as Christ came not to be served but to serve.
