💛 "Mercy Begins at Home: Becoming a Good Samaritan in Your Family"

“Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
That’s the question a lawyer asked Jesus. And Jesus, in typical style, responds not with a straight answer, but with a story.

A man is robbed, beaten, and left for dead. The religious people pass him by. But the unlikely hero, a Samaritan, stops. He not only stops but he cares. He gives. He loves.
Jesus ends the parable with a challenge:
“Go and do the same.” (Luke 10:37)

🏠 But What If the Wounded One Is in Your Own Home?

We often think of the Good Samaritan as someone helping a stranger… but what if the person lying wounded is your spouse? Your teenager? Your parent?
What if the one who has been hurt, ignored, or misunderstood lives under your roof?

Many families today are rushed, stressed, and emotionally distant. We walk past each other just like the priest and the Levite. We’re present, but we’re not really there. We avoid conflict. We ignore pain. We say, “I’m too busy,” or, “It’s not my problem.”
But the Gospel pushes us gently and firmly:

“Don’t walk past the wounded. Stop. Love. Be moved.”

✨ Mercy Is Not a Feeling—It’s a Decision.

The Good Samaritan didn’t feel like helping. He was probably tired. Busy. In danger himself.
But he chose to stop. He chose to help.

Family love is often inconvenient.
It means helping when you’re tired. Listening when you’d rather scroll. Forgiving when it’s undeserved.

💬 “Mercy is not soft, it’s powerful. It heals what silence never can.”

💬 “You don’t need to have all the answers, just be willing to show up with love.”

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Families Are Called to Be Healing Places

A Catholic home isn’t just a roof and walls. It’s a school of love. A hospital for the broken. A training ground for saints.

Let’s be honest, sometimes it’s easier to be kind to strangers than to our own family members. But Christ’s call is clear:

“Love your neighbour as yourself.”
And that neighbour? That includes the one who takes your last bit of patience at home.

💬 “Charity begins at home, but it doesn’t end there.”
💬 “Family is where love is tested, and transformed into holiness.”

Rewriting the Script

If you're struggling with frustration or feeling disconnected from family, try this simple prayer reflection:

  • Notice your thoughts:
“They never listen to me.” “Why should I bother?”

  • Challenge the script:
“Maybe they’re hurting too.” “What would Jesus do?”

  • Act with intention:
Send the message. Offer the hug. Say the prayer. Be the Samaritan.

💬 “Jesus doesn’t need your perfection, just your participation.”

🌿 A Family That Walks the Road Together

We’re all travellers on the road. Some of us limping, some of us bleeding inside, some of us too busy to notice.
But today, we can choose to stop.
We can choose to become a healing presence in our homes.

Let your family become a place where no one passes by the wounded… because we stop. We care. We love.

✝️ Final Thought

💬 “You may not be able to fix everything in your family, but you can start the healing with mercy.”
💬 “Be the one who chooses love, even when it’s hard. That’s how families become holy.”
