There’s always something that needs doing. The laundry pile never ends, dinner needs cooking, children need lifts, and work emails creep in even during family time. Life at home often feels like a never-ending to-do list. Sound familiar?
In Luke 10:38–42, we see this exact struggle in the home of two sisters: Martha and Mary.
Martha is busy hosting, preparing, making sure everything is just right for Jesus. Mary, on the other hand, simply sits at Jesus’ feet, listening. While Martha feels overwhelmed, Mary is at peace. And here’s the twist: Jesus gently tells Martha that Mary has chosen the better part.
🙋♀️Martha’s Heart Lives in Every Home
Martha wasn’t wrong to want to serve Jesus. Her hospitality was beautiful and necessary. But what Jesus noticed was that her worry and distraction were stealing her peace.
How often does this happen in our families? We run around trying to make everything perfect, and in the process, we lose the joy of being present with the people we love and with God.
💬 “God isn’t asking for your perfection, He’s asking for your presence.”
🛑 Stop. Breathe. Be.
In a world that glorifies being busy, Jesus invites us to slow down. To sit. To listen. To simply be with Him and with each other.
It’s not about doing nothing. It’s about doing what matters most.
Imagine this:
-
Instead of rushing dinner, we pause to say a small prayer.
-
Instead of cleaning while kids talk, we sit with them and ask about their day.
-
Instead of planning tomorrow, we thank God for today together.
💬 “The most important moments in life are often the ones we slow down enough to notice.”
👨👩👧👦 Faith at Home Begins With Presence
If our homes are to be places where Jesus is welcomed, then He must be invited not just into our work, but into our hearts. He doesn’t need a perfect home. He longs for a family that makes room for Him in the middle of the mess.
💬 “Holiness isn’t found in doing more, it’s found in loving better.”
❤️ A Family Challenge: Choose the Better Part
This week, take one simple step each day to become more like Mary, without losing your Martha heart. Here are some ideas:
-
Morning Prayer Together – Before the rush, say a short prayer as a family.
-
Tech-Free Dinner – Let the table be sacred space.
-
Family Silence Night – Just 10 minutes with Scripture, music, or reflection.
-
Gratitude Jar – Each family member writes one thing they’re thankful for.
💬 “Don’t just invite Jesus into your home but make space to sit with Him.”
🕊️ Closing Prayer for Families:
Lord Jesus,
In the middle of our busyness, help us not to forget what truly matters.
Teach us to sit at Your feet together, to listen, to love, and to rest in Your peace.
May our homes reflect Your heart; welcoming, gentle, and full of grace.
Amen.
