There’s something deeply comforting in those words from Jesus “Do not be afraid.”
As parents, as spouses, as families trying our best in today’s world, we hear this and breathe a little easier. Why? Because we need to be reminded that we’re not in this alone. God is with us. And He’s pleased to give us His Kingdom. What a Father!
But then Jesus shifts the focus, He tells us to be ready, like servants waiting for their master to return. He wants us to live alert, not anxious. Awake, not stressed. Faithful, not fearful.
👨👩👧👦 A Home That Trusts
Trust doesn’t come naturally, especially when bills pile up, when a child is struggling, when there’s tension in the home. But Jesus invites us into a new mindset:
“Let go of fear. You are not abandoned.”
We learn that fear often grows from false thoughts:
-
“What if we’re not good enough?”
-
“What if we lose everything?”
Jesus counters these with truth:
-
You are loved.
-
You are held.
-
You are given the Kingdom!
When fear arises, take a moment together to name one truth you do know. Let God’s voice be louder than the worry.
🕯️ Living Ready – Together
Jesus says, “Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit.” (v.35)
This isn’t about panic or paranoia. It’s about living with a sense of mission. Imagine what our homes would be like if each day was lived as if Jesus was coming for dinner.
Readiness doesn’t mean perfection. It means:
-
Saying sorry after an argument.
-
Helping someone in need without waiting to be asked.
-
Making prayer part of the family rhythm, not a last resort.
➡️ Family challenge: Create a “Readiness Jar.” Each week, write down one small act of love you did as a family that helped you be more like Jesus.
🔑 “To Whom Much Is Given…”
Jesus ends this passage with a gentle but serious reminder:
“From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded.” (v.48)
God has blessed our families in unique ways; time, talents, presence, patience (sometimes!). These aren’t just for us to enjoy; they’re to be shared, multiplied, and offered.
➡️ Reflection question: What has God given our family? And how can we use it to bless others, especially those who are struggling?
✨ Final Thoughts
We don’t need to have it all figured out. But we do need to show up, hearts open, hands ready. The Christian home isn’t perfect. But it is watchful, trusting, forgiving, and ready.
💬 “Faithfulness is found not in doing grand things, but in doing small things with great love, over and over again.”
So today, dear family, let’s be:
-
Less afraid
-
More awake
-
More generous
-
More faithful
Jesus is coming. Not to catch us out, but to catch us ready.
🙏 Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, help our family to be ready; not with fear, but with love. May our home be a place where You are always welcome, where trust overcomes worry, and faith leads the way. Amen.
