"If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. If your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. And if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out."
At first glance, these words might seem harsh. But as we unpack them, we see that Jesus is calling us to radical holiness, to remove anything from our lives that leads us away from God.
Facing Distractions in a Distracted World
Let’s start by acknowledging the world we live in today. We are surrounded by distractions — some good, some bad, and some that quietly lead us away from the path God desires for us. Social media, instant entertainment, consumerism, and the relentless pursuit of success often pull us away from our true calling. In the hustle and bustle of life, it is easy to lose sight of what is most important: our relationship with God.
Just like the disciples in today’s reading, who were focused on "who is in" and "who is out," we too can fall into the trap of comparison. We might look at others and wonder if we measure up, or we might feel proud that we are better in some ways. But Jesus immediately redirects their attention and ours: What are the things in your life that cause you to stumble?
Is it pride? Is it envy? Is it distraction?
The Courage to Cut it Off
Jesus uses strong imagery to teach us that sometimes we need to make difficult decisions in order to grow closer to Him. Cutting off a hand or plucking out an eye isn't literal here, but it highlights the seriousness of sin. Sin damages our soul and separates us from God. In the same way, we are called to cut out whatever leads us into sin.
But what might that look like in our modern world?
For the young: It could mean stepping back from unhealthy relationships or avoiding environments that lead us into temptation. Perhaps it’s limiting time on social media to avoid jealousy or comparison.
For families: It might involve intentionally cultivating prayer and faith within the home, especially amidst the busyness of work, school, and extracurricular activities.
For all of us: It might mean being mindful of the content we consume, whether it be the shows we watch or the conversations we entertain. Does it lift us up? Does it lead us toward holiness?
Cutting something out might feel painful at first, but Jesus promises that it leads to life. He doesn’t want us to carry the heavy burden of sin or distraction; He wants us to be free to live in His light.
