Peace Be to This House – Living the Family Mission

🕊️ Introduction: Every Family is Sent

In today's Gospel (Luke 10:1–9), Jesus sends out seventy-two disciples two by two, not alone, not in isolation, but together. This passage isn’t just about missionaries in sandals walking dusty roads, it’s also about us, in our homes, our schools, our workplaces. It’s about families being sent to bring peace, healing, and hope.

📣 “God doesn’t need perfect families—just willing ones.”

You may think, "We’re not ready. We argue, we’re busy, we have our own problems." But Jesus still sends us. And He sends us just as we are. Like the disciples, we go with trust, not with a perfect plan.

🏠 1. “Peace Be to This House” – Start at Home

Jesus tells them, “Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house!’”
Peace begins at home. But let’s be honest, sometimes our homes are anything but peaceful. Between work stress, homework, bills, and misunderstandings, it can feel like we’re just surviving.

Here’s the good news: Peace isn’t the absence of noise. It’s the presence of Jesus.
And when Jesus is present, even chaos can become calm.

In moments of family tension, pause and ask, “Is what I’m thinking helping or hurting our peace?” You can choose your response, not just react.

📣 “Let your home be a chapel, not a courtroom.”

👣 2. “Take Nothing with You” – Let Go of Baggage

Jesus says: “Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals…” In other words: travel light. He isn’t just talking about possessions. He’s talking about burdens.
Families often carry emotional baggage: past mistakes, old arguments, disappointments.

Letting go doesn’t mean forgetting; it means choosing freedom over frustration.

Holding onto resentment is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to suffer. Reframe the thought: “I choose to forgive because peace is more important than being right.”

📣 “You can’t walk in God’s mission if you’re weighed down by yesterday’s wounds.”

🤝 3. “Stay There… Eat What is Set Before You” – Be Present and Grateful

Jesus tells them not to hop from house to house, but to stay. In our fast-paced world, families struggle with presence. We may be in the same room, but our minds are miles apart: on screens, to-do lists, or worries.

Being present with one another is one of the greatest acts of love.

📣 “Presence is more powerful than presents.”

Try this: Each day, say one encouraging thing to each family member. Watch how that changes the emotional atmosphere.

🌱 4. “Heal the Sick There” – Love Heals

You might say, “But we’re not healers.” But every family has the power to heal, through love, forgiveness, encouragement.
Healing happens in the ordinary moments: A hug after a bad day. A kind word. A prayer before sleep.

📣 “When a family chooses love over pride, miracles begin.”

Jesus didn’t say you need to have all the answers. Just be there. Pray. Listen. Love. That’s healing.

🙌 Conclusion: Families on a Mission

Jesus ends with these powerful words: “Say to them, ‘The Kingdom of God has come near to you.’”
Every time your family chooses kindness over anger, prayer over panic, service over selfishness, you are bringing the Kingdom of God into your home, your school, your community.

📣 “Your family may not be perfect, but it’s powerful because it belongs to God.”

🙏 Invitation to Families

I invite you to do two simple things:

  1. Bless your home – Maybe say together: “Peace be to this house, and to all who dwell within it.”

  2. Choose one small act of love – A note, a hug, a prayer. Something simple. Something real.
