🕊️ Teach Us to Pray: Learning to Trust God Together as a Family

There’s something beautiful and vulnerable in the request the disciples make to Jesus in Luke 11:1 “Lord, teach us to pray.”

It’s a simple sentence, but filled with humility and longing. These were grown men, many of them religious Jews, yet they recognised something different, something powerful in the way Jesus prayed. And so they asked.

This same request can become a daily prayer for our families:
“Lord, teach us to pray.”

🏡 Prayer Begins at Home

In today’s world, where routines are rushed and distractions are everywhere, prayer often takes the backseat. But families that pray together, truly stay together. Not in some magical way, but because prayer creates space for grace, for healing, and for unity.

Start small. Even a simple “Our Father” said before meals, in the car, or at bedtime can become a seed that grows into a life of faith.

💬 “God doesn’t expect perfection in prayer — just presence.”

✨ Our Father — A Family Prayer

Jesus gave us the perfect prayer. It’s not just a personal plea; it’s a family prayer.

We say “Our Father”, not “my Father”. He is not only your God, but the God of your children, your spouse, your in-laws, and even that family member you struggle with.

This prayer reminds us that we are:

  • a community not just individuals,

  • dependant not self-sufficient,

  • and called to forgive, just as we are forgiven.

Reminder: when we pray the “Our Father”, we are retraining our thoughts, moving from worry to trust, from control to surrender, from resentment to forgiveness.

🛎️ Ask. Seek. Knock. (vv. 9–10)

Jesus doesn’t say “If” you ask… He says:

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.”

As a family, don’t be afraid to pray for specific needs. Encourage your children to talk to God about their worries, exams, friendships, decisions, dreams.

Keep a family prayer journal; write down what you’ve asked God for. And when prayers are answered (even in unexpected ways), go back and thank Him.

💬 “God may not always give us what we want, but He always gives us what we need — especially the Holy Spirit.”

🎁 The Best Gift: The Holy Spirit (v.13)

Jesus ends with this promise:

“How much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

The Holy Spirit is God’s very presence; His comfort, wisdom, peace, and strength. And this is the greatest gift your family can ever receive. More than money, more than solutions, more than anything this world can offer.

Invite the Holy Spirit into your family life:

  • Before decisions

  • In moments of tension

  • During celebrations

  • When there’s confusion or fear

🌱 A Final Encouragement

Prayer is not about having the right words. It’s about showing up, together, in front of a Father who listens, who cares, and who always answers in love.

So today, gather your family and pray: “Lord, teach us to pray.”
and he will.

💬 “A praying family is a hopeful family.”
💬 “Prayer doesn’t always change the situation immediately, but it always changes the heart.”

🙏 Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,
We come to You as a family, asking You to teach us how to pray.
Help us to trust in Your goodness, to seek You daily, and to knock with courage.
Fill our home with Your Spirit, and guide us with Your wisdom.
Make our house a home of faith, love, and forgiveness.

Amen.
